A sign in glowing neon out front of the Silver Crest Donut Shop exclaims “we never close.” Inside, fluorescent lights cast a harsh light on the turquoise-blue counter, walls, and ceiling. ⠀ ⠀ The kitchen serve basic diner fare, the bar offers a choice of Coors and Bud Light, though they have a full license and the Greek proprietors will likely offer you a shot of ouzo if you chat them up.
It probably sounds like hell on earth to most people, a haunt for petty larcenists and amnesiacs, but the Silver Crest represents a noirish demimonde that’s almost entirely disappeared from San Francisco. The donuts are mediocre, but I recommend them to people anyway, because one day, they too will be gone.
