GPhone Doesn’t Work On Clie TH55

I’ve given up on VLI’s tech support for GPhone, the VoIP software for Palm. The download page said it was compatible with Palm OS 5.x devices, but was only tested on the Palm Tungsten C. I contacted support after trying it on my Clie TH55, but fell into a loop where they kept recommending I try the same simple things and telling me that Clies use non-standard audio hardware. I’d, in turn, tell them the results of those simple tests and explain that the TH55 uses standard Palm audio APIs.

Hopefully they’ll find a solution, but I think the hangup with the GPhone software is a network problem.

Subject: Trying to use Gphone sofftware on Sony Clie PEG-TH55

Software runs, but cannot sign-in. I get message “Login Failed, try again,” but I’ve checked and double checked my G-Number (000000034705)and password. I know I’ve got network connectivity, as I can get email and browse the web. Any ideas, or is the software just incompatible with the Clie PEG-TH55?

Thank you,

Casey

Dear Casey,

My apologies for the lack of response.

Please try your Gphone Number and Password to log on to www.gphoneonline.com — this will verify that the information is correct (note that the password is case sensitive, i.e., b is not the same as B).

However, on a bad note, our Palm client is not compatible with the Sony Clie models. The reason being that Sony uses proprietary sound drivers that we have not licensed. We are investigating the licensing of this technology now. This would not cause the failure to login, but the voice will be stripped.

Thanks for your interest in Gphone.

Thank you for responding.

I can successfully sign-in to the website using my Gnumber and password, it’s only in the Gphone Palm application that I have a problem.

I’ve read that most Clies use different sound hardware or drivers and are incompatible with regular Palm audio software, but that the new Clies, including the PEG-TH55, do support the standard Palm audio software. I’ve only been able to test an MP3 player so far (it worked), but I had high hopes for Gphone.

Thank you,

Dear Casey,

Hmmm…you’re able to login to the website, but not the Gphone client. Please reply with the error message you are receiving, I am guessing it is either a “lookup server unavailable” or a “time out.” Also, if you send your Gphone number (without password) I will look in the log files to see if there is anything unusual. And if you can describe a little about your network environment, that may be helpful.

With regards to the Sony Clie–we have not tested on any of the latest Sony’s and therefore don’t know whether they have changed sound drivers.

My Gnumber is 000000034705. When logging in with the Clie, I get message “Login Failed, try again.” This happens very quickly. I can see that a dialog box appears after, but it disappears before the text is displayed, then it gives the login failure error.

I’ve been trying at my office where I get a non-NAT address (I have 158.136.151.128 just now) and I’m mostly not firewalled (it’s very, very lenient). I’ve also tried, with the same results, at home where I’m NAT’d behind a Netgear router on a cable modem.

Thank you,

Casey

Dear Casey,

Thanks for your interest in Gphone. The first step to diagnosing this is to have you log in to our website at www.gphoneonline.com (remember the password is case sensitive — a b does not equal B). If you are able to logon to the website and you have the same Gnumber/password set into the client, then we have a connectivity problem. However, on a sad note, I must inform you that our client does not run on the Sony Clie product line currently. Sony uses proprietary sound drivers and we are in the process of licensing that technology from Sony. Please check back soon to see if we have posted a Gphone client for the Sony Clie.
