Things Learned About Natural Language Processing at THATcamp Bay Area

Aditi explains n-grams

The first session I joined at THATcamp was Aditi Muralidharan‘s text mining boot camp, and the topic seemed to set my agenda for the rest of the event (though I wish Aditi had also hosted her proposed data visualization session).

  1. The licensing of the Stanford Parser (and other Stanford NLP software) is not meant to be confusing! It’s available under the GPL v2+, and any usage consistent with that license is okay. However, like various other software such as MySQL, it is dual-licensed, and a commercial license is also available for organizations who would like one, including but not limited to those that wish to incorporate the parser into proprietary software.
