We just returned to our home after a lovely two days with family. It was the first time in a long time that we were all together. It was wonderful, special, and bittersweet. It was our first Christmas with our newest family member and our eldest is battling cancer. There are many aspects of celebrating Christmas that have become a nuisance as I’ve gotten older. My complaints are not original. The over-commercialized, plastic insanity that seems to rule season truly cheapens what this time can be. Like many people, the times we lived in forced us to scale down and economize our celebration this year. Instead of spending time running around in crowded stores with bad lighting, I spent my holiday prep time with baking supplies and paints. I can tell you that the gifts I gave this year were more filled with love than any I have ever swiped my charge-card to buy. The gifts I received: home-made granola, photos, and the hemming and repair of clothing are cherished and savored. We played games, prepared food together, laughed, swapped stories, and comforted one another. It’s been a tough year, but right now I feel like millionaire. I wish a merry Christmas to all.
Happy Thanksgiving November 26, 2009

At The Feathered Nest Thanksgiving is the most eagerly anticipated holiday of the year. It is easy to understand why. Thanksgiving is a holiday that centers, largely, around food. For a culinary enthusiast like myself, it is a chance to have fun and show off a bit. However, there is another component of the day even more essential than a golden, glistening bird and stack of creamy mashed potatoes. That component is embedded in the very name of the day. Today is the day we all give thanks for the many wonders of our lives.
I truly lead a charmed existence and I try never to take that for granted. Were I to list all those things I am thankful for this blog post would read like War and Peace so I will try to keep it simple. I am thankful for family, friends, fur balls, and food. I am thankful for my husband and home. I am thankful for a job that is rewarding and that I have never known want. I am thankful for music, laughter, color, and whimsy. I am thankful for you, for taking a moment and reading my musings.
Happy Thanksgiving to all.
Happy Halloween October 29, 2009
I must confess that I love decorating for just about every holiday. Halloween is a personal favorite. My bias is against overloading on tacky, mass produced decorations. I like things that homemade, unique, and bit quirky. I have a dress-form who changes clothes for each holiday. I change throw pillows and sofa blankets to coordinate with the seasons. I also have a wonderful old slate blackboard that I draw on to give the kitchen a bit of holiday pizzazz. For this Halloween I went with a sexy little witch. She may be my alter-ego; I don’t know for sure. I do know that I like having a little va-va-voom in my favorite room. Happy Halloween. I wish you all a bewitching time.
