My friend Will was in meetings all day Friday, and there are few better times to have SMS messaging than in meetings. Thing is, I didn’t want to type on my phone’s numeric keypad when I had my computer in front of me, so I went looking for the details of this old hint that describes how to send SMS messages with iChat (would also work with any AIM client).
But there are other solutions. Slipstick lists the email addresses for various networks’ email to SMS gateways. And, obviously, most networks have web forms to send SMSs. Here’s Verizon’s.
This leads to a few questions. In these days of number portability, how can a person identify the carrier for a particular phone number based on the number alone? Will these web and email to SMS gateways work for off-network numbers (i.e. will Nextel’s gateway send SMS to Sprint?)? Is there another network agnostic gateway besides the AIM service identified above?

Funny…I just spent a few hours last week writing a very ugly VBS script to send SMS messages easily without requiring me to open Thunderbird or a web browser.
Services like Yahoo! Mobile and Backpack’s reminders can send SMS messages, but as far as I know, they’re just using the same email addresses that Verizon, et. al. expose to everyone. A quick search on Google turns up all kinds of commercial SMS gateways, but all of the ones in the top 20 results want some sort of subscription.
There is at least one FreeBSD licensed WAP/SMS Gateway, and a few commerical versions that might be capable of sending carrier agnostic messages. But, with such a high probability of the service being abused, who would want to set that up on a publically available server?

I wrote a small ASP.NET script to send SMS over email from our server - mostly for friends to use and since my cell service is such crap.
Benn trying to figure out how to handle the whole from name, S:, M: issues - but I have a feeling those may only be appearing on my POs phone…
