What the show’s creators don’t have to disclaim are the three Tony Awards the show won in 2004 for best score, best book, and best musical.

Sandee bought the cast recording (also at Amazon) because they’re the sort of tunes that get into your head…the sort of tunes you’ll find yourself humming days later. But that’s what you expect of a good musical — especially a hilariously funny one.

Above is Sandee with Kate Monster, the kindergarden teacher who dreams of opening a school for monsters. I believe the performer at left is the understudy, but I’ve lost the program and can’t begin to remember her name. They go well with cards and dice and slot machines and such. And even though the cards and dice and slot machines and such aren’t my reasons for going to town, I do enjoy a drink. Above, center you see the West Wing Bar’s Sidecar with cognac, triple sec and lemon juice. At the left is a pinapple mojito from the Wynn’s Terrace Pointe Cafe.

We lunched at Emeril’s where Sandee enjoyed a grilled sweet barbeque atlantic salmon on a homemade andouille sausage and brabant potato hash with spicy onion crust and worcestershire sauce and I tucked into a grilled filet of beef on maytag blue cheese grits with caramelized onion reduction and fried leeks.

We dined at the Melting Pot fondue restaraunt where we enjoyed the four-course “big night out” combo. Our server prepared the spinach and artichoke swiss appetizer fondue at our table by combining chopped steamed spinach, chopped artichoke hearts, a blend of aged emmenthaler and gruyere cheeses with a touch of parmesan and tabasco. A California salad with raspberry black walnut vinaigrette dressing followed that. For an entree we cooked center-cut filet mignon medallions, breast of chicken, oriental potstickers, black tiger shrimp, teriyaki marinated choice sirloin and vegetables in a red wine with garlic herbs.

Dinner was a novelty, but desert, their version of a bananas foster, was delectable. White chocolate with caramel, Bacardi 151, Grand Marnier, and cinnamon. The Bacardi and flame makes a flambé, and it turns out cinnamon sparks when ignited, which our server took good advantage of. We dipped bananas, of course, along with strawberries, apples, marshmallows, pineapples, and cheesecake.

Sandee took advantage of the after Christmas sale at BCBG and picked up a green velvet dress and these fabulous gold shoes, all the better for dancing in. And about dancing, of course there was dancing.

That’s where Vincent from New York found me. He pulled up in a cherry red Dodge Viper and asked for my help getting pictures of him with his car. We got shots with him standing at every corner and both doors, which is probably what I’d want to do if I was driving that car.

Owner Joe Sobchick and his wife Stella started business in 1945 with a cafe called Virginia’s. They converted it into a bar in 1953, and changed the name to recognize their proximity to the nuclear tests just 60 miles away.

Now nearly 90, Joe believes he’s been in business longer than any other single bar owner in town, and it’s been a good run. You’ll see his sign in TV, magazines, and movies, most famously perhaps in Martin Scorsese’s Casino (1995) with Robert De Niro and Sharon Stone.

The decline of the neighborhood challenged the Sobchiks, but they fought back. And amazingly — for a city that is constantly reinventing itself — the community seems to have stood behind them.

Nobody’s saying what caused it, but things didn’t go as planned at the MGM Grand Sunday night. We were told our room wasn’t ready when we tried to check in a little before midnight, so we ambled over to the cafe for a midnight breakfast on the house. Then at 3 AM, when our rooms still weren’t ready, we were sent to the Bellagio with a voucher for a free room and cab fare.

Vegas is a strange town that knows how to keep secrets, so it’s pure conjecture on my part to think that the housekeeping staff executed a work slowdown on Christmas day, but it fits what little detail I’ve learned.

Anyway, after a night (morning) in the Bellagio, we’re now checked into the MGM, and they just delivered a gift basket with a letter expressing their apologies and all. Some people were pretty angry and steaming last night, but I can’t complain so much.

As it turns out, I love Vegas. Here's why.

Las Vegas may be the most thoroughly American city. No other town has been so shaped by the singular desire to make a buck. Churches and strip clubs coexist in close proximity. Each competes for the hard luck — but not broke — gamblers seeking refuge from their losses. If Capitalism works, it works in Vegas.

Vegas is America’s liver. The worst of pop culture eventually finds a home someplace in Las Vegas or the surrounding Clark County. Good taste, if you wish to employ it, is imported from out of town. Some of the swankiest hotels and casinos host celbrity chefs or big name shows. Even those, however, are somehow reinterpreted in their most excessive forms.

Vegas looks like a construction site that was never cleaned up, and in many ways it is. Clark County, the home to the city of Las Vegas, grew by 85% between the 1990 and 2000 census counts, compared to 13% percent nationwide. The county, who’s only city is Las Vegas, accounts for over two thirds of the state’s population with 1.38 million people. Of course, more census facts are available online.

Of course numbers hardly tell a story. Follow these links to other sections for more:
