Big Bear Photos Circulating

My dad forwarded me the following pictures and story:

These pictures are of a guy who works for the US Forest Service in Alaska and his trophy bear. He was out deer hunting last week when a large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away. The guy unloaded his 7mm Mag Semi-automatic rifle into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him.

The big bear was still alive so he reloaded and shot it several times in the head. The bear was just over one thousand six hundred pounds. It stood 12′ 6“ high at the shoulder,14′ to the top of his head. It’s the largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the world. Of course, the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Commission did not let him keep it as a trophy, but the bear will be stuffed and mounted, and placed on display at the Anchorage airport (to remind tourist’s of the risks involved when in the wild).

Based on the contents of the bears stomach, the Fish and Wildlife Commission established the bear had killed at least two humans in the past 72 hours. The US Forest Service, backtracking from where the bear had died, found a hiker’s 38-caliber pistol emptied. Not far from the pistol was the remains of the hiker . The other body has not been found. Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to hit the grizzly with four shots (they ultimately found four 38 caliber slugs along with twelve 7mm slugs inside the bear’s body) it only wounded the bear and probably angered it.

The bear killed the hiker an estimated two days prior to the bear’s own death by the gun of the Forest Service worker. Think about this - if you are an average size man; You would be level with the bear’s belly button when he stood upright, the bear would look you in the eye when it walked on all fours! To give additional perspective, consider that this particular bear, standing on its hind legs, could walk up to an average single story house and look over the roof, or walk up to a two story house and look in the bedroom windows.

Not wanting to get fooled again, I went to check it out on Snopes.com. Surprisingly, Snopes says the pictures are real, even if the story is heavily embellished:

The basic story here is true although some of the details are wrong, perhaps because two different recent incidents of very large bear killings in Alaska have been conflated into one.

The bear pictured above was killed in November 2001 by a hunter (not a Forest Service employee) who came across it while he was deer-hunting in Alaska.

The hunter told his own story at HuntingNet.com.

The pictures of the November 2001 shooting became confused with a later account of a killing, also in Alaska, of another very large bear.

That story is told here.

Update: Grizzly Man, a new movie by Werner Herzog, is related only in theme. Here’s my vicarious Grizzly Man movie review.

I thioght the true story was more interesting than the fabricated one.

He shot the Bear from TEN YARDS.

I wonder if he had to change his underwear afterwards?

Nice, to find out the “true” story about the bear caper. That guy “mark” who submitted his wisecracking comments about the guy maybe needing to change his underwear is a real schmuck! He probably would have been hiding somewhere or trying to scale a very tall tree.

  4. Comment by Gabe on March 14, 2005 10:25 pm

this animal was a beautiful creature and it kills me to see that picture of it just lying there with the blood smeered on it’s face. i love animals way more than people, so i think it was a damn shame to see an amazing beast fall down to a guy that probably did sh*t himself and then fired a gun.

  5. Comment by 95CHVY on March 15, 2005 10:13 am

I’d like to see how much you would love this animal when he was stripping your skin and muscle off of your femur bone, like he did to that one hiker. Its a shame to kill such magnificent and one of a kind animal, but thats the price when you eat people, or attempt to eat people armed with large rifles. Animals never come before people, you bozo.

  6. Comment by john ellis on March 16, 2005 3:38 pm

Regarding the comment of “95CHVY”: that one hiker was probably killed by the bear, but quite probably NOT eaten by it! The way the leg was gnawed on, it is quite possible that other and also probably SMALLER carnivores were at work on the cadaver. You can further “research” such fantastic reports and photos quite easily, and thereby find what is fact and what exactly is embellished! Must admit though, to have seen such a magnificent animal alive in the wild (preferably from a good distance), would have been terrific!

  7. Comment by Jarod on March 20, 2005 4:05 am

I strongly believe that we take advantage of the fact that we live in civilization. This is still a planet, not a zoo, and sometimes you walk on another beasts territory. Even though we are very sophisticated, we are sill just animals, and you can’t expect to have your hand held everywhere you go, especially in the path of a 1600 pound creature. I think it is the hiker’s fault (and any other animal attack victim) for invading its land. On the other hand, the bear is just as stupid for charging a man with a rifle. As long as forest service didn’t hunt down the bear for “murder,” then I don’t think it was that barbaric…

  8. Comment by Jarod on March 20, 2005 4:09 am

What i also think is stupid is how we hunt down animals for killing people. Why not hunt them down for killing deer? It’s all the same in their eyes, and if you think people are SO special, why have we destroyed more life than ANY OTHER SPECIES ON EARTH????

  9. Comment by stephen on March 27, 2005 1:11 pm

First off Jarod…Your saying that you would let a 1600 pound bear take a swing at you with its claws almost the size of a toyota hub cap? NO! you wouldnt..I get sick of people like you constantly bitching at society when actually if we stepped down and let the animals get the top of the food chain it wouldnt be any better.

  10. Comment by Jarett on April 1, 2005 2:43 pm

I can’t believe this bullshit. You guys are saying its his fault for being there? We’ are the most evolved species on the planet; that means that we were here before the current form of bear, and lion, and all the other man killers, save for croc’s and sharks. So, if anything the bear was invading on our, the peoples, space. And personally, whether it be man or beast, I’ll kill anything that tries to kill me. And I’ll do it with no remorse.

  11. Comment by D on April 2, 2005 6:11 pm

Jarod, the comment about humans destroying more life than any other species on earth is silly.

Stop and think for a second…

Humans are a minority species. There are FAR LESS humans than animals.

Just the number of ANTS outweighs humans by leaps and bounds… With their combined weight greater than the combined weight of all humans, ants are the most numerous type of animal on the planet… and they “destroy life”– even each other — all day long.

Actually there is a staggering number of wild carnivores on the planet at the moment. There are far more animals out there right now “destroying” other species.

It is impossible that humans have “destroyed more life” than any other species.

And the comment that is “stupid how we hunt down animals for killing people” is just offensive.

Not to kill an animal that kills humans is to say human life has no value and it’s just fine for another human to die.

If we are to live by your faulty logic, Jarod, then why try to elimanate diseases? Why not just say, “I think it is stupid how we try to eliminate viruses for killing people.” After all, a virus is a living organism. To turn your phrase: What makes people SO special over viruses?

Taking your statements to their ultimate conclusions means we should accept that it is ok for serial murderers to walk the streets too.

Why not hunt bears for killing deer? Because a deer is the natural FOOD of a carnivore… a human is not because we are at the TOP of the food chain.

And if you don’t think your life is more valuable than a bear, then why not go take a walk into those woods unarmed and do yourself and the bear a favor?

first off, ants don’t kill people everyday, there are someplaces where ants can and have killed people but your argument is ridiculous. humans have killed off more plants and animals then anyother species. we consume natural resources at an alarming rate, and we don’t balance our population with our habitat like animals do. we’ve taken the be fruitfull and multiply and blown it way out of proportion. if you still don’t get look out all plants and animals that are extinct or are on the endagered species list. sorry, the farther we build homes into the forest the more animals will attack to defend their young our territory. just like if you get into the ocean you take that chance of getting bit by a shark. if your in their habitat they only reacting the way nature made them react… get a clue humans are only on top of the food chain because we use weapons, go out there with a knife or spear and will call it a even fight

I think it is quite funny to sit here and read all of you people argue with each other…. Just think would you want something that large charging at you? I mean hell i know if something like that was running towards me i’d be shitting myself. All these men are doing is sharing there expierience with us, the rest of you are just blowing things out of poportion. Put your self in their shoes!!

  16. Comment by common sense on April 11, 2005 4:59 pm

You people who are crying over this thing…get a life. The bear killed two people and was going to kill a third, but since humans are smarter than bears… the guys shot it in the head with a big gun…personally, if a 14 foot bear was charging at me, i would think twice about shooting it in the head…and then id probably laugh at you people who say that guy shouldnt have killed the bear…becasue i dont think if that bear was charging you, youd sit there and say, “pretty bear!! come here and let me hug you!!” No, in fact you kind of people are prbably the ones who would cry and be its next victim…Humans are dominate…bears arent…dont cry

  17. Comment by Renee on April 16, 2005 10:35 pm

Humans are on top of the food chain, because we have evolved, thank god bears arent smart enough to use a gun. but hey, they have big ass teeth to defend themselves and claws and size, thankgod we have an equilizer. and i would definetely want someone to shoot that big ass bear if i didnt have a gun and someone else with did!!! i would die from a heartattack if i saw that prix in front of me somewhere, thats what nightmares are made of, and i love animals, but not human killers, when cougars come into our towns and thats not us in their supposedly wilderness, are we to leave them be or shoot their asses, i say shoot their asses and they will hopefully over time evolve to know not to come where we are. humans have to stay on top, we have to, thats all there is to it, and thats a fact, and you cant argue with a fact, so for you bleeding hearts -like dude said earlier-why dont you go take a walk in the woods, id like to see your bolstering ass cry about shooting the bear then, you are assinine!! and ignorant!! hopefully your kids will evolve into the future to be smarter than you!!!

  18. Comment by pat on April 18, 2005 11:30 pm

first off renee i hope your kids evolve to be smarter than the dumbshit redneck you are. when cougars travel into towns its because we have overpopulated and waste all our natural resources by spreding like viruses all over the country. first off if you investigate this story farther the wildlife officials that took over this incident said the bear did not have anyone or any parts in its stomach nor was it 14 feet tall. when you travel into the woods to hunt bears for nothing other that it being a so called sport you people are the morons. there is no viable reason to hunt bears other than some dumb ass macho trip. and guns are not equalizers they are nothing but a means to kill. so when we humans kill off everything and cut down all the forests and pollute the planet all the dumb shit rednecks can get together and drink beer, talk about guns and killing animals, and then inbreed all day long!!!!!! get a life, study the story and you might educate yourself. i doubt it thought.

  19. Comment by bink on April 22, 2005 9:25 am

Can’t we all just get along. On another note, it’s funny when you act educated and still can’t spell

  20. Comment by Derek on April 26, 2005 10:03 pm

You guys are idiots, whoever defended the mans actions by saying “it was self defense”…NO! it’s not self defense, he went out in the wild to do what?? HUNT AND KILL ANIMALS, he wasn’t on a nature trail w/ a gun! Get real info. before ou talk like an ass…and for those people that said humans were here before the current form of animals, did you not forget that we evolved too?? not necessarily from apes (which i believe we did), yet we did obviously evolve…

  21. Comment by Scott on April 27, 2005 10:20 pm

If you don’t have the instinct of self preservation, which some of you evidently don’t, then you deserve to die. It is that simple. He killed the bear, and if you had half a brain you would to. Of course, If you had half a brain, you would’nt need me to explain that.

I love how you all bitch about how we are invading upon their territory. Houses and development push upon habitat, not people. This guy was out and about hunting looking for tasty little animals to kill and eat. Animals are delicious and I prefer to eat baby rabbits because they are so tender and cute.

It is very obvious that most of you have no real clue what nature is about. Most of you deplore killing animals in their natural habitat, but don’t even think twice about eating a tasty turkey sandwich at Togos, which comes from a turkey that was electrocuted and then cut up, ending its life in a cage in its own feces.

I realize that I’m not going to change any of your opinions about how it is good or at least justifiable that he killed the bear, even though the bear would hvae killed him. So I’m just going to leave you with this. I want you all to know that I’m going to make it my mission in life to kill animals. Everytime I hear a bleeding heart liberal moron whine about how cruel that is while they sit on their leather couch, I”m going to make a tally in a book and kill something. I’ve killed lots of animals. I’ve killed ducks, geese, phesants, doves, quail, deer, rabbits, squirrels, antelope and even a really big bear. I even once smited a woodpecker because he looked at me wrong. I value their life and enjoy watching them in nature, and then eating them. But guess what, this is natures way. And every time i hear someone bitch about how I hunt, it just makes every animal i kill and eat just that more delicious.

  29. Comment by BB on May 6, 2005 11:53 am

I wonder if bears sit around and discuss this shit. Maybe they have environmentalist bears. A bear kills a deer and all the candy ass bears start an uproar about how he was encroaching on the deer’s territory, and really should only be eating berries if he was any kind of REAL bear. There should be well marked zones for bears to tread on cause them deer have their rights. I mean, what is a carnivores bear thinking killing a poor innocent deer? What kind of animal would even consider it? Savages. All them damn meat eating bears. Why are they even out beyond them berry bushes in the first place? And don’t get me started on them damn deer either. I mean, if they don’t quit eating all those bushes and creating such a environmentalist’s nightmare, they will have to answer to the eco police too, let me just set all you straight on that because I’m a activist and I know these things you morons….. Just stay in your houses 24/7 and deal with it.

I lived in Fairbanks, Alaska for many years and what bothers me about this story is, where in Alaska did this happen? There are no deer other than in SE Alaska to my knowledge & they are very small and seldom hunted
The size is more that of a Kodiak bear than a Grizzly.

How many of you anti-hunters were this enraged about the last world record bear? Are you angry because this is now the largest bear killed? What about the smaller bears, even cubs, don’t they deserve this kind of outrage? I wonder if that big bear killed any smaller bears? The truth is that hunting is a great necessity. It is not simply for boasting or bragging rights, but more so for the conservation of the animal. It has been found true that without hunting, population suffers.(people and animals)
I would agree that there are some hunters who are idiotic in their pursuit of wildlife. But I believe that there are many more hunters who enjoy the sport, whether they kill or not, and quite truthfully have a greater love for the animal than the supposed love that those of you who oppose hunting claim to have.

This bear was taken by a hunter not protecting himself from danger, but actually hunting. The human remains are probably from a bear attack yes, which should remind us that humans are not the dominate species in the wild and we all need to be aware of our surroundings. We all have to remember that wild animals were here first. Wild animals do not read books or have any knowledge. Therefore a meal is a meal to them. We need to respect the animals and understand that we all share the earth together.

For the ones that are saying this is such a shame to see this beautiful creature dead….beautiful it may be but are you trying to tell the world that if this so called beautiful 1600 lb. creature came towards you not to play with you but to kill you or your child you would do nothing, YOU ARE SOO FULL OF IT. I could care a less if all the bears in the world would be killed. We have much more in this world going on that is a lot worse then this death of a KILLING ANIMAL!!!! Watch the news and find something more important to argue and cry about!!!

People: Do the math. Huge Bear coming at you ready to snuff out your life. You, wanting to live and not die out in the wilderness all by your lonesome, decide to shoot and wound, or possibly kill the big ass bear so you can get away to safety. Looks like a simple enough equation to me.

I hope you all know that this story is BS. The picture is real and the bear is too but it didn’t just happen, wasn’t 14′ as described and it hadn’t eaten anyone. The bear was 11′ and it was killed in 2001 by a guy in the Air Force stationed at Eilson AB in AK. Go to http://www.alaska.com/activities/bears/story4434968p-4676055c.html for the real story.

The guy talking about ants only said the ants out weighed people , you brought it up that they don’t kill people. Ever hear of the soldier ants of Africa. Thousands of humans and animals die every year when they march.
Yes I am a hunter and I eat what I take or I don’t take it. Much the same as you buy groceries , only my foods are not raised with chemical formulas. I do believe that God made the place for animals. And that place is right next to the mashed potatos. So, think about what your eating next time you go to Micky D’s
You have a very slim train of thought if you think everyone who hunts is a red neck or in-breeder. Could it be you have a quilty mind. HHHMMMM Hers another thought for you. Who was the first one to place animal skins on a human’s back??? Thats right your maker in the Garden of Edin when a dim wit woman plucked the apple she was told to leave alone. Other then food, why do we need to hunt.

To control Animal Population? Well they did a good job of dying before we got here, why do they need help dying now?

I would hunt for food. And I would kill if I need to save my life.

But I don’t agree in controlling animal popluation. I can’t wait for a more evolved creature to come along and control our population. I say we need it desperlately.

Perhaps that’s what AIDS is doing. Controlling out popluation.

My life is no more weight then any animal’s life. I can die just as easily. I don’t have the right to kill something just because it’s ‘inferior’. A bear in the wild will kill to eat, to defend. Not to control an animal’s population.

First off, the bear didnt kill any people. you guys are mixing your storys up, the story most of you are thinking about just happend a little while ago in alaska where a bear did kill two people, but it wasnt the bear that you guys are all winning about that got killed in the pic. the picture of the bear you guys are seeing was killed in 2001. so how the hell could people that were killed in 2005, have been killed by a bear that was killed in 2001. second off the bear didn’t charge the hunter, he shot it from ten yards away, while hiding behind a tree, but yes it did take a couple of shots to kill. and thirdly it isnt the world record bear either, so before you people all bullshit about something get your facts straight. the real story can be found at http://www.blackbearheaven.com/world-record-grizzly-bear2.htm

ok, if i was walking down a trail and i seen a bear comin at me. 14 ft or 4 ft. it dont matter how big the damn thing is, its a bear and im a man, instinct tells me to kill or be killed. i love animals just as much as anyone else in this world. they are very fun to look at, they are very amazing, they are beautiful. im sure any hunter will agree with that. thats why hunters do there part to help animals servive. hense food plots etc. we also have our place on this earth to hunt animals and enjoy the beauty of them right next to our potatoes and beans. for some reason soy burgers dont sound as good as moose burgers to me. and for all of you that think all hunters are red necks and gun toetin hill billies, i cant wait for you to die and go to heaven so you can go call the great men of this nation who gave you freedom and rights a redneck or a hill billy. see if mr washington himself, or mr lincoln will agree with you. if you dont want to hunt and kill dont then. but if you decide that then do me and my fellow hunters a favor and let us have our rights also. after all when this nation has to go to war for what ever reason good or bad, would you rather send someone with a tree huggin desk job or a hunting season. infact go find out how many of our soldiers that fight for you and me everyday. and pay the ultimate sacrifice are tree huggers. i bet the majority are on our side.

As a Presbyterian Minister, I am saddened by the failure of so many peopoe to realize that humans did not evolve, but were created in the image of God in the position of master species and caretakers of this planet and the life on it. What makes us so special is that we are the only mortal creatures created in His image with this special relationship to Him (at least on this planet, I can’t say for sure if there are others on other planets or not). Many other creatures on this planet were created by Him specifically as food for us. We were not meant to be food for any of them.
In fact, the Bible actually requires that when any animal kills a humn being the animal is to be killed, just as any human who commits premeditated murder is to be executed. For a genuine Christian, that is, as they say, “end of discussion.” Hunting is a legitimate activity, authorized by God. Deer and other game animals are a resource He has given us to use and control. Hunting is the best method of carrying out that responsibility. The meat of wild game is better for us than most commercially raised and processed meat today.
Venison, for instance, has virtually no fat, and the collesterol it has is the good kind.
The fellow who shot this bear was reportedly deer hunting at the time. Certainly no hunter who knows his weaponry would intentionally go after a grizzly bear with only a 7mm rifle. The hunter’s life was clearly in jeopardy in this bear attack. So he had an absolute right to kill the bear in self-defense. Anyone who does not understand that one human life is more precious and valuable than all other animal life combined has no idea who God is or why we exist. The purpose of human existence is to glorify God and fully to enjoy Him forever. It is not to be bear food. One of the facts of how He created us is that we are the top predator on the planet. It is very sad and unfortunate that so many people today have lost their instinct and appreciation for this very rewarding and perfectly natural activity. I don’t know about this particular bear. It would be pretty tough meat, I imagine. But I have eaten black bear sausage; and it was delicious. It tasted a bit like beef. I don’t believe in killing just to kill.
But I certainly do enjoy the thrill of the hunt and the excellent eating wild game provides. It is an affront to God to condemn hunting when it is a very significant part of how He created us to function.

While I hate to play “pig pile on Larry”, I never shy away from a socio-political debate. To say that “humans did not evolve, but were created in the image of God” suggests that you know a thing or two about your religion, but nothing at all about the theory of evolution. Believers and non-believers can shout back and forth all day without making any headway, but this much is certain: faith is not a virtue, as it is a non-standard. On faith alone, one is equally likely to conclude that God created man, floods are caused by angry spirits, the universe revolves around the Earth, and the tooth fairy leaves quarters under your pillow. Larry claims that “one human life is more precious and valuable than all other animal life combined”. In fact, without other animals and the eco-systems they support, humans would soon perish. Whereas, in the absence of human-wrought destruction, eco-systems would flourish.

To “beef or bear”: your views seem to rest on a misconception; that U.S. soldiers in Iraq are fighting on our behalf. Iraq never posed a threat to America, but people like you are interested in retaliation, not sober facts. That is why Bush can say “up is down, black is white” and still get enough votes to hang onto power.

Let’s put it this way. I’m a tree hugging desk jocky, and I’m so sick of you friggin’ gun touting, trailer park dwelling, primered firebird driving, budwiser drinking, nascar watching white trash redneck bastards that I’m just about ready to take up arms.

You are a canker on society!

Oh, and for my qualifications, and likelyhood being effective with a gun in my hands: I load my own 9mm rounds, have won many awards in both trap and pratical shooting competitions, own several semi automatic pistols with 15 round magazines, and have vast experience with a number of fully and semi automatic assault rifels, including the MP5, M16, SKS and AK47.

Remember that there are plenty of people in the libberal, anti-war, tree-hugging camp with combat stills too. We’re just to evolved to build our life around guns and war.

    And yes… Evolution is real.

Some of you people should read the book Alaska Bear Tales by Larry Kaniut, you would understand why they shot the bear. I would never have to pull the trigger if one came at me, I would die of a heart attack first. And some of the stories in that book have scared the hell out of me..

  89. Comment by salmonriver john on August 28, 2005 9:08 pm

as you read this, notice that your eyes face foward, not to the sides or slightly behind as most herbivores.look in the mirror, you have both canine teeth for tearing and molars for grinding.our ears are located to the sides of our head facing foward for sound location during pursute. man is an omnivore much like the bear. I cannot condone killing for (sport), but if one takes issue with another for harvesting what is to be utilised for food purpose than the argument becomes invalid. some prefer to work for themselfs rather than have it pre packaged or dilivered via a drive up window. to say that man does not belong in the wilderness would be to deny the past as it has only been in the last few thousand years that man has beome less of a hunter/gatherer and more sedentary, depending on others to do the work for him. it is truth that all life on earth depends upon death of some sort to survive. I do not condeme someone for choosing a vegan lifestyle anymore than i can make someones dicision as to when to have or not have a baby,,or seek a doctor to help with suicide, these are personal choices. and i will not ask permission or make apoligies for mine. we are as much an animal here on earth as the bear or the elk we pursue. and please remember your freedoms are the same as mine.

  90. Comment by John on August 31, 2005 12:16 pm

We are still members of the animal kingdom even though some may believe we’re above it all, due to our intelligence. We are still predators and we are still prey, in many instances, to thousands of animals around the planet every year. We must remember that bears, lions and poisonous critters are not cuddly Disney World animals, that will carry on a conversation with you, beside a waterfall as the beautiful sun sets over a mountain range. Every animal in the wild, lives and dies a violent and sometimes extremely prolonged, violent death as it helps to feed other predators. That’s the way it’s been and that’s the way it’s always going to be. Species will evolve and they will disappear, regardless of how many times folks unnaturally interfere, trying to change the natural course of things.

  91. Comment by salmonriver john on August 31, 2005 9:00 pm

  92. Comment by John on September 1, 2005 6:33 pm

I enjoyed your take on the whole issue also. I remember speaking with a fellow from Washington State years ago and how fanatic he was about people looking after the wilderness. He would get extremely upset with hunters, fishermen and tourists for whatever reasons and wanted the wilderness in his area to remain unspoiled and untouched. Well, nature herself ended that dream for him when Mt. St. Helens went off and killed all the wildlife and devastated the forests and lakes. That’s what change is all about. Things come and things go. Our evolution happened to be faster than other animals and the tools that evolved with us made us more capable. If we could all look 10,000 years into the future, chances are, none of what we’re arguing over today will have made any difference in changing the nature of the planets evolution.

People argue about the most meaningless trivia. We worry about a bear that was killed 4 years ago. Everything that we have and all of the beauty that we see around us could be gone in the blink of an eye like John said about St. Helens, which is minute in comparison with Yellowstone, which is overdue to explode. When it went off the last time, it totally annihalated most of Western USA and left one foot of ash on Mexico and an inch of ash on Florida. It changed the temperature of the atmosphere for years and screwed up everything on the globe that was normal for that time period. There won’t be a tree left to hug and no one will be worried about anything but survival for their families. PETA fanatics will be glad to get road-kill to feed their children. Be careful what you believe as your way of thinking can change overnight due to circumstance. Look at Indonesia.

One day an atheist was taking a walk through the woods.

“What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!” he said to himself. ” And to think they were all created by a cosmic accident”

As he was walking alongside the river he suddenly heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to see a seven foot grizzly bear charging towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path but he looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing in on him.

Suddenly he tripped and fell to the ground. As he rolled over to pick himself up he saw the bear right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him.

At that instant the Atheist cried out: “Oh my God!”

All at once time stood still. The bear froze. The forest was silent. As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky: “You deny my existence for all of these years, teach others I don’t exist, and even credit creation to a cosmic accident. Why do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?”

The atheist looked directly into the light, “It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask You to treat me as a believer now, but perhaps could you make the BEAR a believer?”

“Very well,” said the voice. The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. And then the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together and bowed his head and spoke:

“Lord, bless this food, which I am about to receive from thy bounty , Amen.”

I know, I know…. but it seemed to be befitting of this forum… plus, you all needed some humor.

To im a tree hugger and all else who commented that hunters are “bad” and “rednecks”. Let me just tell you that hunting is not killing. Hunting is a very respected sport. It is a way of life, maybe we should let nature over run our neighborhoods. I am from Pennsylvania, and come hunting season you will not find me anywhere but the woods. And after hunting season you will not find anything on my plate but deer, or if I am lucky enough bear. I eat every bit of the animal that I harvest, and to read how wrong it is angers me greatly. I am a tree hugger that is great that you can shoot all of your fancy guns, but put a bow and arrow in your hand and a living breathing deer in front of you and lets see how great of a shot you are. You people make me laugh. I hope that this reply is read by the people who always have something smart to say. And yes I think it is great to see a wonderful animal like this harvested, jnow we can all enjoy his beauty in a mueseum. Now im going to go drink me a budweiser and watch a nascar race…..PSYCHE…

The true story was published in Field and Stream I believe. As I read these replies I shudder at the ignorance of humanity..Think about this, in wild animal herds, the weaker of the species is left to the outside of the herd to be taken as prey.To be eaten by others,so it would be. In the human species we surround the weakest protect and feed them, allow them to breed, multiply to the point they become a burdon on the rest of the species.Maybe these animal attacks are Gods way to thin the gene pool. Some thing to think about the next time you read of one of these yuppie tree hugger hikers jogging in an area they stopped hunting and they become Cougar or Bear food. Everyone hug your tree while you make sure you saftey harness is adjusted correctly.

    Hey Pez,
If your parents finally decided to get married, would they still be considered brother and sister?

  145. Comment by John on January 13, 2006 11:45 am

If your going to kill something for food or self preservation, thats fine. If your not going to eat it or your not defending yourself from it, then leave it for some other predator to eat.

Humans are natural born predators and that only becomes evident in non-hunters when they have to feed their children during a disaster. Everyone will kill something to feed their hungry children. I saw it happen many times in Bosnia where animal lovers had to feed the family dog and cat to their starving kids because there was no way to get food without dodging sniper bullets.

Folks in North America hunt because they want to and that’s the freedom of choice we have developed here over the last 200 years.
It’s easy to want to ban hunting and say you’ll never kill an animal when you live on a continent where there is a supermarket within 10 miles of anywhere and you have the money to pay someone else to do the killing and wrapping for you.

Pray to God that you never end up in a situation like Bosnia or Indonesia that will force you to eat your own words.

I just saw this film and it moved me on a number of levels. If you look at the movie poster its marketed as a quasi- religious experience with the bear in the background and a religious light shining down. While I was moved- my questions are- what did we learn from this film? No facetious responses please. I couldn’t agree with some of Tims incontinent AMerican optimism [we can relate to and understand everything] and neither could I see the blank stare of the bear as always expressing nothing other than the blank pitiless indifferences of the universe [Germanic pessimism] Surely the real debate we are having here is all about how we should live our lives and the discontents of civilization. Dr Johnson’s friend Sam Boswell once received a letter from a guy living with an “Indian” woman in the back of beyond in the Canadian Wilderness. To wit the guy said: ‘here I am with this Indian woman by my side and this gun with which I can procure food- what being could enjoy greater felicity?’ Boswell showed it to Johnson -this was Johnson’s response.
“Beware sir this is dire stuff. If a bull could speak it might as well exclaim- here I am with this cow by my side and this grass- what being could enjoy greater felicity.’ My questions are- wasn’t Tims version of the simple and good life- a little bit too simple?. And secondly what did Tim learn as oppossed to what we felt we learned about Tim. I’m not sure about this. I guess the answer is “to live with bears” The only probelm is we’ve been avoiding this for most of our race memory- and thats why we have houses and shops and supermarkets and roofs and all the stuff that we now find so appalling. And thats not to say we haven’t lost something. I’m just not sure that Tim recovered it. On another level the language in these exchanges is interesting. Tim was an ‘animal lover’ Some people seem to use this as a term of abuse. If you say somebody is an ‘animal’ you of course also mean it in a pejorative way. Think about animal lover and the structure of the words. What other word could come before ——lover? Its a mark of how badly we treat ‘animnals’ that our language is semantically degraded in this way. Anyway enough. The film was great and if Tim wanted to get eaten by a bear that’s up to him. If he wanted to eat bear shit thats also up to him. what i worry about is that after this film there may be a number of individuals looking for a mythic platform on which to present themselves. You know the kind of thing- ‘I failed in the human jungle but hey look I can live out here amongst the bears’.Isn’t this also about “achievement” and “ego” and all the things the film might actually want to stand against? One other thing. People are upset that the bear ate him. So what? That bear held out a bloody long time. Don’t you animal haters know the Randy Newman SOng ‘The One you love’ Lyrics go– ‘She may be hungry. She won’t say. You better get a burger or something in her right away. If not yer gonna pay- at the hands of the one you love’ Well to all those people who keep slagging off bears I can tell you that those goddamned bears were a helluva lot more tolerant than most people I know. Come on it didn’t woolf down its food or kill him straight away AND IT WAS STARVING. And neither did it complain about what was on the menu. What I’m saying is Tim did learn a lot- how to live with bears. What I’m asking is- how is this gonna help my own fucked up meaningless piddling 9-5 existence in an office. Should I too turn and live with bears? or should i be grateful that I’ve got a roof over my head, don’t have to live in a tent and can watch a film about bears in a nice comnfortable art deco film theatre. Or would that be just “meaningless”?
    Yours faithfully
    Muddled and confused but engaged.

That last post should have gone to Grizzly Man.
Regarding the Hunter. You Americans probably don’t know what Oscar Wilde said about fox hunting- ‘The unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable’ Thats pretty much whats going on here I’m sure. I would also hazard a guess that the young man in the pic has a very very small penis or a problem with sexual dysfunction. In fact its almost a certainty. Hunting is actually an excuse most men use to get away from their ugly fat wives ‘I’m just going hunting dear’ and so on and so forth. Its a shame these poor creatures don’t understand this. In England we can’t afford it and have to make do with a small garden shed.

    In reply to Phil (Phil-loser)

Read Your long of tooth post and found more reason than ever to be appalled by the state of affairs in society. It seems that there are fairly educated people out there who beleive what the well heeled ones in positions of power would like to have us beleive. They scatter sand on the ground at your feet and say “this is corn - eat!” and you scatch and peck. Your sad philosophy of “this is what society demands we be and do” is quite unsettling to me. I fully agree with the reply by Rush Limbaugh as these liberal dems are the american version of your people. Do you honestly wonder why you cannot afford to hunt for game to supplement your meager diet and have to rely upon a small garden shed for the pittance you can eke from it? I am an american and I live in Alaska in a remote “Indian” village with my girlfriend and our child and yes, we have a couple of stores where you can purchase food. I hunt and fish and harvest shrimp, clams, and crabs from our waters, but I also work a regular 8 hour day 5 days of the week and live in a nice efficient house. I am thankful for all of these things but, I am far more thankful for the freedom to do so many more things for myself. Tim Treadwell (actually Dexter) was a mentally impaired individual who made some very bad choices in his life and can hardly be characterized as normal. His “incontinent American optimism” as you describe it would only apply to those few (and it appears many have been at this post) who lack in any kind of grip on reality. I love all the animals and will not hesitate to help an injured or ill animal, or one in a dire predicament, even if it is of the species I am hunting. I subscribe to the code of hunting ethics that is common to the majority of hunters in Alaska and observe the rules and regulations. The taking of any life, human or animal should not be done lightly. In the case of the bear picture that began this post, I know of no reason why the bear would not have been reduced to the possesion of the hunter unless it were taken illegally, in defense of life or property as set forth by state law, or the hunter donated it to the State. I saw the show too, and I was moved on a couple levels as well but, Tim obviously had a poor grip on the reality of his mental problems and on the nature of the coastal brown bears here in Alaska. He went as far as creating a false name and history so he could bilk his followers and investors of their time and money to further his lunacy. I’m quite sure a lot of people, especially the school children he infected with his delusions, sucked his ignorance of bear behavior up like soda. I don’t feel sorry for him, I just never cease to be amazed by all the people who will beleive anything they are told or read and end up with a Disney-fied view of the natural world. Far better that people look up real reasearch done by educated people who have done real scientific studies than rely on the rantings of a self proclaimed authority. Tim probably really did want to save these animals, but in the end He got himself, his girlfriend, and 2 bears killed not to mention prompting all sorts of reactionary events by the Park Service and other government agencies. I’m also quite sure that the attention generated by Herzog’s film will only go to help fund many of the so-called animal rights organizations that claim to help ensure the future for wildlife but are also self serving political influence pedling devices. Anyone who was truly concerned with helping these and any other great animals would be well advised to get online and see where funding for habitat preservation and enhancement come from and go to. I have and it is amazing how much comes from hunters, fishermen, and organizations like the National Rifle Assoc.. There is a second benefit with the N.R.A. that we Americans enjoy that you Brits do not - They help preserve the American Bill of Rights - not just the second ammendment, but all others which will become fair game for the liberals who would like nothing better than to have us chained to a New World Order which amounts to nothing more than a fear driven dictatorship. The once proud British People have been reduced to defenseless subjects at the mercy of criminals and their own leaders. If you don’t beleive this, check out some real statistics and studies done by non-biased researchers and find out the truth about gun ownership and crime and how those who would further their own interests twist the statistics to mislead and swindle the good people for their own ends.
You may wish to go and do a little surfing (if you can without being monitored!) and and then spend some quality philosophizing time on these things Phil.

ps - I can’t beleive you would stoop so low as to criticise a man who lives as he wants and does what he wants by saying that he does it to escape his fat, ugly wife or that his penis size or sexual prowess are involved. You should hear youself and use your brain to get a bit less muddled and confused and then act as a thinking human.

The guy was nuts, and this is coming from someone who’s an animal lover and not afraid of most creatures. Any i don’t feel any compassion for people who choose to live out their pastimes in the territory of a dangerous animal, be it jogging, hunting, mountain biking, camping, or filming documentaries.
The way he dies may have been extremely brutal, but he forfeited the right to die a conventional death when he chose to partake in that foolishness.

I love this story, even if an awesome specimen of natural wildlife did die. When my brother first told me about it, I was awed! It saddens me that the original story was actually a meshing of two true stories, but it’s still a good one! And I love animals too, but these stories don’t sicken me as much as the ones about neglected pets and the people who put kittens and puppies to sleep because their kids got tired of them. Oh, it happens.

To hunt or not to hunt? Well if you ask me it all depends how and why and with what level of knowledge and respect the hunter has for his quarry. Hunting is a natural thing for us people to do…its how we got here. But Trophy hunting is a little different. Do we really believe that this poor hunter was minding his own business and all of a sudden he got charged by a crazy huge bear???? NO! he knowingly entered a wilderness with the intent of killing something wild. I confess that here i judge this person in a negative light just because im not sure of his motivation for the kill…Did he do it because he needed to take a life to ensure his own survival??? NO! Im judging that he is probably like most people that willingly take lives for sport; he probably does it because it was fun and he likes and “respects” the wilderness.

For me it is hard to see the sport in sneaking into an animals home and hide out in his kitchen and shoot him when he comes to get a drink…

Ive seen it first hand while i was in Africa and some of it is pretty ugly. Like the guy that shot a widebeast and then followed it (with the help of his guide and trackers and Toyota land cruiser) into the next valley. When he found it standing in the shade of an accacia tree he decided not to deliver the kill shot so that he could brag that he’d killed it with one shot. He was proud of himself…until it ran into the next valley instead of died. Well i think thats pretty ugly anyway.

The flip side of the hunting coin is just that, COIN. If people who like killing didnt PAY to do it there may not be any animals to shoot. For starters no body would be able to justify protecting the animals from the mass of humanity that presses in on all sides of most african parks, and all wilderness for that matter. The land is needed to plant crops; to feed PEOPLE. How could you deny starving people without providing them some trade off?

The idea is to hire people from surrounding villages and show them that there is value in preserving the parks by creating jobs. How in North America do we find more value in preserving the wild parts where bears now live instead of turning it into dollars for oil and other resourses? Which leads me to what i think many people know but dont know they know…

There is no Wilderness anymore…Unfortunately most of it has been reduced to a RESOURSE. Its sad but true. we all have to acknowledge that maybe the time to have gained any spirutual connection to any wild thing died allong with the slaughter of north american indians and other first nations for example. All of a sudden people did not need to live IN the environment…We just changed it to suit us.

Well to hunt or not to hunt? over to you…

    To Phil- (philassholepher)

It must be a real pain for any of the folks that know you. Poor bastards have to sit there and listen to your long-winded explainations. You only end up making everyone think your full of yourself. What most folks can explain in a sentence, you just go on and on and on until you lose sight of the original topic and the audience to boot. Sucks to be anyone within ear-shot of you.

Tom: Don’t cry for my people. None of us want to live in a cold wigwam using stone tools and having to kill and torture my neighbors before they kill me, as it was only 600 years ago here in North America. They didn’t even have horses then, and if you happen to break your leg and could not keep up with the tribe, you died. I like the technology and the longer lifespan and the ease of transportation and clothing stores and education but I never use my ancestors hardships and dilemmas as an excuse to have people cry for me. That’s not how our proud ancestors would have wanted it. We live in this age and we should accept it for the way it is and not try to make it into some kind of perfect fantasy world that will never exist.

First of all, please shut it all of you “In God we trust-people”. Your “God has made us better than the bears” crap is making me sick. Of course we are more intelligent and better evolved and capable of surviving through means of this evolution ie. weapons.

However, the fact that we are more suited for killing - and do practice it vastly more than any or all animal species alive in no way makes for an argument pro the murder of this bear.

Neither does the lousy point of “what would you do, if you were pitted against this bear?”. Well, it’s pretty damn indifferent as I never will be. I would never go outside in a forest to shoot a bear with a gun. It’s not ‘caus I would be on IT’S territory, it’s due to the matter of fact, that I would have no reason at all to kill the bear.

And STFU you stupid and moronic hunters saying, that you would kill the bear to eat it! If you really were a hunter, you would know, that it’s got lousy meat, and that the only sellable item from it is the skin or it’s claws. Please go kill yourselves you miserable fucks.

And by the way, Pat and Jarod, I salute you! People are more abundant than these creatures and are thus from a logic point of view worth less. During my life I’ve put down two poachers while in Siberia, and I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to slay any person who tries to steal life from one of Gods creations. It’s His bidding, and it means more to me than stupid white men wanting to earn money on helpless creatures.

Please burn in hell - and doubt not, my Liege shall indubiously put you there.

This is too all those fuckin tree huggers… u guyz r so fucking stupid. animals dont have rights. a right is something that u find in a constitution and last time i checked they didnt have 1. but that doesnt mean we can go around killing animals just bc we feel like it. the reason for that is bc it is morally wrong. there should b somekind of reason for killing an animal. food, survival, or the inconvienience of that animal would b a good reason. sometimes if its a sparrow or some kind of stupid ass bird enjoyment would b a reason. if animals should b able to live, then they should b able to die too. if no one killed animals there would b too fucking many of them. a deer getting shot is the same as a deer getting a disease and dying or getting eaten. u shuoldn’t ridicule hunters bc they do have strict rules and laws that protect animals. if u poach a deer out of season here its gonna cost u 25000 dollars. thats an ass load of money. so if any one is protecting animals its the hunters and the people who enjoy hunting. the only way u would b able to protect all these fucking animals is by standing out there in the woods wit them an kill who ever tries to kill them. but that would b even more wrong than killing an animal itself, and then u yourself would end up dead… so i guess ur kinda bak at square one, only ur burning in hell… happy? leave the animal conservation to the guyz who respect and know a thing or too about animals and the environment. seriously im pretty sure u guyz r like the most hated ppl in the world besides the guyz who kill other ppl.

Those of you who turn your noses up at the thought of killing and eating animals. Think about this if something happens for what ever reason and we can’t go to the store, we’ll get along just fine. Can you say the same?

Most people well versed in woods lore, love and respect the earth and all the animals on it. We were taught this by our parents who were taught by theirs and so on. We try to give back as much as we take. So that our children will be able to teach their children and so on.

But then those of us with a drop of native America blood in us know how screwed up the white man is.

I am totally against killing any animals without just cause. I do believe this was just, thank God I was not found in this bear’s stomach>>>what a horrible way to die! I do also think with all my heart that if there was a way to not kill this beautiful creature, it would not have been killed. 14ft tall, amazing, wonder how old it was. I also wonder why it hated man>>enough to kill him (or us)what did we do to piss him off! Like bears or any animals for that matter aren’t smart enough to figure us out by now!!!!

  192. Comment by TGH on March 27, 2006 9:11 pm

I’m not a hunter, but i will say that their is a flipside to this story. I’ll bet all of you animal rights activists out their probably didn’t realize the number of young bear offspring that are saved when a few large males are culled from the group. Large males frequently consume their own offspring and the offspring of other litters to induce the female to come into heat so that he can mate with her again. I’ll bet a bear like that would have killed dozens of cubs, i mean the mothers wouldn’t have stood a chance at stopping that thing. So, in retrospect we can see that by taking out some of the big males, more offspring can survive. Hey, more bears! Nice kill dude, you just saved like 20 cubs with that shot. Hey, I love bears and don’t kill them, but their are some positive results-you fuckin hippies need to do some research. Im an environmentalist too, but I support hunting and fishing because it is an essential part of successful wildlife management. If you really want to help the bears and society, strap a bomb to your chest and run into some of those big hydroelectric dams out their, let the salmon in, and feed the bears. Can’t you see the benefits! More food, more bears, and less of you!

I am not a hunter by any means but my husband does hunt all year for every season, and he also fishes. He likes it and I would never take that away from him. He has never got his trophy yet but I will come someday. As for this bear disscussion, every liberal out there acts like cave men never ate meat, “hunting” has been around for ages and it just so happens we have evolved and have rifles to use instead of spears or what ever it was they used.

My husband deer hunts with a bow and it is, I think, more difficult than guns or rifles. Believe me he has missed more than shot. I guess my point being as early back as cavemen we have hunted animals, before fire they just ate them raw or dried them in the sun when they finally figured that out. We are all sort of like animals just because we use guns to hunt doesn’t me it’s not fair. It boils down to a stupid, stupid debate, huunting will never go away it will be here until mankind is gone and if all of you out there who hate hunting, so be it we don’t care! We don’t like some of the things you do either, this world will never be at peace. Get over it you liberals!!

For humans to hunt is normal. For a human to hunt and kill a bear is normal. For a human to kill a bear in defense is normal. Bear meat IS good. What I have NO respect for is the person(s) who kill deer here in michigan, cut the head off and dump the body on Michigan State Highways. I AM SICK OF SEEING THIS. The meat could go for good purposes.

We humans are not the top of the food chain, but we are high enough that we do have a strong impact on it. And the impact is not what you’d think. Deer are overpopulated in areas to a point that it will take a drastic disease to bring the population down to realistic. Why? Because of two reasons. a)We were once a natural predator. Not enough people hunt deer. MORE PEOPLE should probably learn to hunt for food. b)We have killed off other high up the food chain critters in order to eat exotic meats like “beef”. If a cougar kills a calf, we kill the cougar. This is the part I struggle with.

However, when the coyote population gets too high, they become a menace that is more than the mere picking of a few other “domestic” critters. But again, those who were natural predators of the coyote don’t hunt much anymore. Interestingly, I’d bet that most folks in the grand ol’ US of A don’t know what most North American indigenous food sources taste like. Bison rocks!, Elk rocks!…

We were once predacious. Our predaciousness now comes in the form of “economy” and we eat animals that were grown in cages … unhappy critters that were grown solely for humans to eat. There is NOTHING wrong with hunting and there is nothing wrong with self-defense. All I would implore is that if you DO hunt, please clean the carcass and take it to a family that needs food. Sheeeesh! The waste is horrible! Don’t dump it on a roadside!

Oh wow, a bear that probably killed hundreds of animals, possibly some humans is doing more damage than this hunter. He did the smart thing, and fought back. He probably shit his pants, but that is not the point. The point is, that it does nothing at all to any part of our lives that this bear died. maybe if he didnt kill it, it would have killed you. it’s really funny how you guys act all smart and then can’t spell correctly. Some did and some didn’t? By now, they would have all evolved. Anyway, it’s just another dumbass man’s idea(Darwin the drunk). Nobody has any proof about anything. In other words, convictions are more dangerous enemies of truth than lies. Look at that dumbass Timothy Treadwell! He thought he had it all down, until a freakin big ass bear munched on his ass too. Here’s the deal. I would shoot the mother-fucker in a heartbeat if it fucked with me, and I’m an advocate of the “shoot to stay alive, not to kill” theory. Some of you would run and scream and probably never get to finish your story. Some of you self righteous bastards would simply think the bear wouldn’t possibly hurt you, and your story would be fucked’ also. Of course there are still more of you with all kinds of psyco ideas about how to handle the situation. But without the gun, either way you’re fucked! So kill the goddamn bear, impeach Bush, ‘the war man’ and get a fucking life. Did you know that Bush has killed more people through neglect already, than Stalin or any bear did. Think about that on your next freakin’ nature walk through bear country. You probably voted for the asshole. Half you assholes did. Now you got to pay through the nose. Maybe next time you’ll think about more than just bears.

I can’t even imagine how many animals are killed or end up losing their homes and dying due to humans populating new areas.

  226. Comment by Shannon on June 22, 2006 12:12 pm

Not that my comment is any more important than anyone else’s here…..but, do some of you really stop to think before you speak (or write)? Number 1, some of you need to get your facts straight first and stop beleiving the first thing someone posts to print. Not that we all don’t like to beleive to some extent, all of these stories that circulate, but it gets to be a point where it is just plain dumb. I’m sure alot of people will respond with some rude comments to me, and that is fine, but really, THINK before you react to other peoples comments so rudely as I have seen above. If you do your research you will find actual documentation of a conversation with the actual shooter of this bear. It was NOT a world record and it was not attacking. Whether that makes him right or wrong, we all have our opinions there, but it was not some AMAZING attack story where the poor bear was the bad guy……oops, did I just show that I felt the bear was shot in poor taste?!! :) Some people hunt for sport :(, but all-in-all, the bear was NOT attacking. And that picture of the guy with the half eaten leg with his privates displayed, well that appears to be fake as well - but nothing found definate. The park ranger guy claims that it is NOT real and is absured. Although, I am sure that can happen, it was probably put with this man-eating bear piece to make it look more interesting.

  227. Comment by Yogi on July 1, 2006 8:42 pm

The half eaten man is indeed a bear attack victim. I do agree that most people haven’t read the whole story here before they comment. Hunting is as natural to man as grazing is to herd animals. People who want to stop all hunting and fishing need to move to their own island and stay there so they don’t infect the rest of the population with their sickness. The rest of us will get along just fine without you.

  236. Comment by Cynthia on September 5, 2006 9:13 pm

Please don’t bring God and the Bible into the argument for hunting, take responsibility for your own actions.

The planet is over populated and over stretched by people and we need to find a way to manage ourselves so that the impact we have is not detrimental to other life also sharing the planet. There is so much that we still have to learn about life around us and it seems an awful shame that we will be the cause of the early termination of systems which have taken millions of years to evolve.

My point is that there should be enough space for all of us - wildlife and people.

I think it’s very sad that many areas of land only exist as reserves because of the support that they get from hunting. I don’t understand killing as a sport. I understand killing for food and how ever you do it, one needs to have respect for the animal in mind, BECAUSE we are human and we have the capability to think up alternative methods and ways of doing things.

Being brighter than someone else doesn’t mean that you have the right to do as you please. If we can keep the planet intact for time to come, perhaps we might evolve into that higher being that so many of us fancy ourselves as.

Hunting and the killing of animals for food and sport has been around longer than Peta, tree huggers, granola eaters, there for how can these so called organizations say they are saving the animals and earth??? I mean really how long have people hunted Deer, A LONG LONG LONG TIME,just as they have bears, rabbit, ducks, geese,so on and so forth, and hey guys look around, they are still here every damn one of those animals are still here and very very abundant,so not to bust your bubble you arent doing anything but causing hate and discontent! They are still here because there are hunting seasons, and control, not to mention population control for animals, being that they mate every year, for instance a female deer can mate for 10 seasons so lets do they math, leats just say there are 600,000 white tail deer on earth, wich there are so many many many mor ethan that but lets just say 600,000 x 10 = 6000000.00 wow what a number,as I said there many more than 600,000 so that was just an for instance so let now be stuoid about 1 dumb ass bear that tried to pull some macho crap on a HUNTER that has every right to hunt rather it be for food or sport,he has that right because we live in AMERICA not CUBA or IRAQ be glad we have that right and think of some better things to whine about like oh lets see, Osoma BinLadin or something like that oh how about our SOLDIERS in Iraq that are fighting and being killed daily, or maybe world hunger,Aids, cancer,,,sorry I was rambling about REAL problems! the right to keep firearms. If you think you can calmly talk your way through famen and barder with the criminals that will have gun’s, then good luck to your family’s. Redneck or
not, I’m glad I won’t have to depend on you to take care of my well being. Maybe you can all huddle in a pile in San Francisco or Key West and amuse yourselves until your demise.

I am an environmentalist, a hunter, and a farmer i live in a 2000 year old tree so it wont be cut down… We will do what we need to to survive…the problem is most of you greedy fuckers do a whole lot more than that. I don’t think anyone should have an automatic rifle… but shit if no one did we wouldn’t be here blogin’ now would we? that hunter now has all the justification in the world he needs to own his. But he’s a 1:6000000000+ ratio that doesn’t justify the bunch of other wingnuts with automatics. People who makes comments like “if a bear came at me i would shoot it even if it didnt come at me i would still shoot it any thing fuzzy and walks on 4 legs is dead to me,” go kill your own meat it doesn’t come the fuckin’ fridge. For those that hunt only hunt what you need, or get in a fuckin circle with your friends and whip it out. and city mongering environmentalists go live in nature!… and see what it really takes to live without all the shit that so many environmentalists bitch about. you don’t need a car. you don’t need electricity. you don’t need housing developments. Fuck you don’t even really need money. you just need to know how to live off the land sustainably. Now the problem is the depletion of resources. go ask your grandpa how easy it used to be to catch a fish. BTW the canadian govt. is being sued by the inuits for global warming destroying their way of life. btw smart asses I am aware that Inuit these day have permanent modern style dwellings and very often ski dos. But read between the lines technology can never be as complete and as efficient as the perfect harmony of checks and balances of the natural systems.SO DON’T FUCK IT UP! whether it be for logging, housing developments, !lawns!, farming that doesn’t replenish top soil, pouring weird fucking chemicles down the drain( which much of is turned into sludge and sold to farmers as fertz inturn after 10-20 years rendering that area toxic and unable to produse edible produce for hundreds if not thousands of years!), land dedicated to cattle grazing etc… the point is learn what you really need then like water, food, shelter, habitat how all those things intertwine and then do what you need to to survive. The sun does not revolve around the earth and everything was not created for our species own selfish wants and needs. BTW if I was being charged by that grizzly I’d hope to high fuckin hell I had an automatic and would pour clip after clip into the fucker. but if i was lookin at him through binoculars, I would gape in the awe of such a magnificent creature.

that so called 14ft bear is all crap!!! well not the bear but alleged size is crap! it was 10.2ft orclose to that, that dude shot that bear for no god damn reason! just for the fun of it i guess, well if u did get that close to a bear youd be freaked out!
you look up different sites bout the 14 foot grizzly and youll find the truth out on nearly every page, that it was 1600 pounds, it wasnt 14 ft it was acually 10.2 ft and 1000 - 1200 pnds, that still is an enormous animal, but it had absolutly no reason to be slaughtered, if i ever find the guy that killed it, i wood walk up and slap him in the face!!

and as for the third picture of the alleged half eaten man, was all crap aswell! someone just added that one in to make it more realistic, that the bear was indeed a man-eater! but in fact it wasnt!!!!!! that pic was off some other f%&*ed up website!

I find comments amusing bear hunting is a great sport. Yes I said Sport. Adrenalin filled
heart pounding endurance of great patience and great skill to be able to outwit out think a animal that’s sole purpose in life is to hunt and kill and survive.
yes Ive eaten the meat it tastes wild and greasy. Id rater eat a beef steak any day. The fur is mostly course and of little value on avg few hundred dollars. BUT THE SPORT
the sport is priceless. Not every bear hunt is memorable. The same can be said about every basket, goal, or touchdown. Over the years and over hundreds of bear encounters I have only few dozen hunts that i will always remember.
(until you have bounced an arrow of a bears brain pan at 10 ft. When he is clicking his teeth and huffing at you You can not criticize my sport.) I have experienced one of life’s greatest highs ive looked death in the eye on more than one occasion and have lived another day. Kill or be Killed? Survival of the Strongest?
The question remains is a humans life worth more than a bears? Only nature knows.
I feel it depends on the human it depends on the bear. In all reality if i were you i would trust neither.

    Sincerely.
    Try hunting

Friendly advice on bear safety for use by peta members.
when hiking in bear country it is important
to carry a pepper based bear spray, also you should tie bells on your clothing so you do not surprise the bears. You should learn how to differentiate tracks between species of bear in area. A grizzlies track is usually larger and has claw prints one to two inches in front of toes. Another way to tell difference in species is the scat. Black bear scat is usually dark in colour with berries and seeds in it, and often smells like cranberries.
Grizzly scat usually contains bones hair and little silver bells, and has a pepper smell to it.

    ENJOY YOUR HIKE

IM SORRY AFTER READING ALL THE POSTS THERE ARE A FEW FACTS WE ALL SEEM TO HAVE OVER LOOKED….
1 GRIZZLYS ARE THE BIGGEST MOST FOULE TEMPERED ANIMAL IN ALASKA MAYBE THE WORLD. THERE LIKE NATURES BULLY. MOST ANIMALS WILL ATTACK IF STARVING OR INJURED, GRIZZLYS, BECAUSE THEY CAN, BECAUSE HES HAVING A BAD DAY OR SIMPLY BECAUSE IT LOOKS LIKE FUN.
I HAVE SEEN ALL OF THIS FIRST HAND BEING BORN AND RAISED OUTSIDE OF FAIRBANKS
2 WE ARE DEALING WITH A BEAR THAT HAS KILLED TWO HUMANS. THE LAST ONE WAS A HIKER WHO SHOT HIM FOUR TIMES WITH A 38. CAL. HAND GUN. TO THE BEAR ITS LIKE A BEE STING. PREVIOUSE TO THAT THERE WAS ANOTHER HUMAN HE ATE, THIS TIME THE HIKER DID NOT HAVE TIME TO SHOOT OR WAS UN ARMED IN THE ALASKAN WILDERNESS(PURE STUPIDIDY). AND TO THE COMMENTER OF “THE BODYS WERE PROBLY EATEN BY SMALLER CARNIVORES” THE BODY WAS PULLED FROM A BEAR PIT, THATS WHAT WE CALL A HOLE IN THE GROUND WERE A BEAR BURYS FOOD FOR LATER AFTER URINATING AND DEFECATING ON IT TO KEEP OTHER PREDATORS AWAY. THERE WASENT ANOTHER BEAR OR WOLF PACK FOR MILES THAT WOULD HAVE CHANLLENGED FOR THAT PIT.
3 LASTLEY THERE ARE DOZENS OF BEAR ATTACKS AND CLOSE CALLS EVERY YEAR IN ALASKA, ALMOST ALWASY ENDING IN THE DESTRUCTION OF THE BEAR( WHOS MEAT AND HIDE GO TO LOCAL NEEDY FAMILYS) AND THE STUDY OF THE BEAR TO DETERMINE WHY THE ANIMAL ATTACKED.
I HAVE SEEN FULLY GROWN MALE GRIZZLEYS KILL AND EAT SMALLER BEARS OF ALL TYPES, THEY ARE NOT THE LARGE FAT FURRY BEARS YOU SEE IN ZOO’S. THEY ARE ON OF NATURES BEST HUNTERS… AND THEY HUNT US.

  268. Comment by Stephen on April 4, 2007 8:04 pm

yea… this is directed to the guy who posted before me, “ALASKA”. you are a total dipshit. first off, take off your caps lock; idk if you use it to try to get attention or what, but ironically it simply pisses most people off. i will respond to your misleading and at times completely incorrect “points” in the same method that you posted them.

    1. the grizzly bear isnt the largest species in neither alaska nor the world you stupid sack of shit. in alaska, you have the kodiak bear (alaskan brown bear), which is larger than the grizzly bear (check wikipedia for more info). and in the rest of the world there are many many species that are far larger. the grizzly weighs about 400-1500 pounds normally. whereas the blue whale, which can way 200,000lbs.
    2. it has been proven that this story isnt completely accurate you gullible son of a bitch. read this– http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals/bearhunt.asp
that corpse isnt related to that bear in any way; that bear is not known to have killed a single human. looks like your theory to try to show off your questionable residence in alaska went to shit.
    3. think about what you are pretending to know about before you say something like this again. lets just look at your statement and pretend it is true (which, judging from your history of being a total idiot/lying, probably isnt so). so, according to your method, if i were the average person attacked by a grizzly bear, i would kill the bear, and donate the hide and meat to poor people and the body research. hmm… i bet they can overcome previously insurmountable obstacles in the field of grizzly physiology with a dead, butchered, skinless bear carcass that’s been shot multiple times. also, bears don’t normally “hunt us” as you have stated. generally when they attack humans, it is due to fear or anger (from invading on their territory, etc etc), not to try to get a meal. once more, at least think before you make shit up so that at least your basic sentences dont show your true idiocy and ignorance.

  269. Comment by Nathan on April 7, 2007 1:05 pm

You people are all a bunch of muppets. A bear this size is an awesome animal acting on instinct. The people killed were acting on instinct too, and two of them were unlucky enough to get caught out. If you go into the wilderness you must expect to attract the attention of it’s inhabitants at some stage, why else would a hiker be carrying a gun? However, this doesn’t mean that we should actively seek out and kill animals like this, they should be revered. We are all animals for christ sake, so to kill one of them for no reason is murder in my eyes. You hill billy freaks who think that just because we’re ‘top of the food chain’ it gives us the god given right to go out and shoot innocent animals who just act on instinct are fucking retarded. Go out and try and take one on with your bare hands you red neck douche bag fuck heads.

to Stephen and Nathan you are both idiots.
to Stephen your partly right as far as bears go
polar bears are the biggest bears north america.
grizzly bears Kodiak and Alaskan bb are all same bear with sub species due to regions size varies. grizzly bear is what all three are called the bear in picture is not a great plains grizzly area shot prob Alaskan bb. And from experience a big one. Just a note i would luv to kill a whale lol.
to Nathan there is a reason its called a food chain. Animals are food. its my IN MY INSTINCT TO KILL ANIMALS as it was in my cave man ancestors. I have to wonder if all life on planet were to change tomorrow how far would you be down on the human food chain. If i were you id go make friends with the biggest red neck you can find.

  272. Comment by bear hunter on April 16, 2007 5:31 am

To Alaska I can confirm most your post you are not a dip-shit as Stephen says. It is definitely true about bears eating smaller bears. They do this to bring females back in to estrus so they can breed again a grizzly bear may kill a black bear as a food source but usually they look for an easier meal. About your bear pit is true burying food. not sure bout the pissing and shitting on food source but at dead moose and deer caches always allot bear shit in area. which only makes sense. Also its true fish and wildlife donate meat and hides to needy families. In this bears case taxidermy donated to airport. as for bears hunting us it sometimes happens on 2 occasions to me once when I was out fishing. I had a bear cross a river and come down bank towards me after waving arms at him banging rocks together and throwing rocks at him, he died from one bullet at 20 yards. I thought that was close enough. and once when I was out moose hunting I heard a stick break behind me 30 yards away a bear was walking with nose to ground on the game trail I was using he also died but really we might just both bin following the same moose track the same direction at same time I guess I could have waited 30 seconds and found out.
P.S, these 2 bear kills rank 4th and 9th on my memorable bear kill scale these were not the near death experiences I mentioned on march 22nd post these were both just bear kills they were not true hunts.

since when is man supposed to look after animals hate to try to explain this to you Courtnay but animals take care of themselves, they have for thousands of years.
in fact in prehistoric times people were probably eaten on a regular basis. just saw on new 34 year old woman hiking B.C. got ate by black bear.
do you think she was trying to take care of it.
its true it is are job as humans to take care of animals now. and the way to take care animals is to hunt trap and manage them so they don’t die from overpopulation and disease. you probably have never seen a deer that is to weak to move because it is starving to death. or a moose that is freezing to death because of tick infestation. how about that mangy coyote that is freezing because it has lost most its hair. and what do you tell the family of that woman the bear just ate. Bears will be bears.

I get sick and tired of people like you who bitch about killing animals and protecting the rainforest but turn your snobbish nose towards humans around you who are suffering and need help every day. When is the last time any of you ass holes stopped to offer asssitance to someone who needed it? 300. Comment by Taylor on November 4, 2007 4:46 pm

    For the real story:
    http://www.blackbearheaven.com/world-record-grizzly-bear.htm

This is just my opinion about this, which is to me very similar to the Jaws era of shark killing.

The facts have been embellished. These guys were hunting the bear, and if you read the story from the guide it is far less dramatic.

As on the guides website(above) he states he fact from the fiction.

    False
    Ted is a Forest Ranger
    the bear charged
    the bear killed several people
the bear weighed 1600 lbs and stood 12.5
    the trophy was seized
the bear is a new world record

    Fact
Ted is a member of the US Air Force
All shots were from 10 yards
    Gun . 338 win-mag-250 grain Nosler Partitions
    weight 1000-1200 height 10.5′
    Brown Bear season open
Bear in early to mid 20’s
    B&C score 28 14/16 rank 150

The sad but true story is that the bear was ambushed in his feeding hole, and that the bear showed no signs of aggression.

This is a hunting story, which should remain just that, a hunting story. However, when the story gets blown out of proportion, adding that people were killed by this bear, it was aggressively charging and finally dying at the feet of his would be next victim, doesn’t do anything but place a sinister portrayal of bears. Very much like what Jaws did for sharks. People destroy what they are afraid of, and the senseless eradication of the numbers of sharks post Jaws was senseless.
People were afraid of the water, thinking sharks were waiting for them. Now with stories such as this, and seeing responses from people who go only on the basis of this story, and say “Hell Ya, I would have killed it too, it ate people.” “People are the top of the food chain.” This shows not the uneducated, but uninformed, and the unwillingness to learn the truth, before they make the opinions of such animals.
More people die from Bee stings and lighting strikes a year than bear attacks. So why don’t people declare war on Bees? However,
the real issues of information are to be educated if you are in Bear Country. Most bear attacks are a result of people’s own negligence. They often provoke, granted most case unintentionally, nevertheless, they overstep their boundaries. In many cases hunting in bear country is risky. Bears are not stupid, since hunters often field dress the game for packing purposes, it doesn’t take long for the bears to associate a shot, with an easy meal.
In most cases the reasons for bear attacks are from people being perceived as a threat, getting too close to cubs, or a threat to a food source.
Sudden encounters, when the bear is startled.
A habituated bear, one who has lost fear of humans because of the feeding in unsecured trash cans, or improper food disposal.
Which really who could not say they would not react the same way if someone were infringing in their home, thought they would harm their kids, or were a perceived threat?
If people use their heads, follow the guide lines of bear safety, then the likely hood of an attack is extremely rare.
The true fact of the matter is, if this had been an aggressive bear then both of these men, if in fact they were 10 yards away, would never have had time to get 10 yards away. They in fact would not have had time to shoot. They would have been in serious trouble, if not dead within a matter of seconds.
In the case of the Grizzly Man, if you watch his interaction among the bears, the only bear that he was afraid of is the one which killed him and his girlfriend. However, he knew the Salmon run was sub par, and he stayed later in than longer than he should have. The bear that killed him, was an old injured bear, that need food for the winter.
However, as he stated himself he didn’t want the bear killed, if one killed him.

Taylor just thought you should know you are right on with most your facts. thing is. I am scared of sharks as are the hundreds of people that are attacked by them. I try not to stand around outside in lightning, and I kill every bee that comes near me. The sport of bee hunting just hasn’t caught on. when I was a kid we used to catch them in jars. just for the sport of it. now kids have computer games and 100s TV channels to watch.
personally I think the world would be better off if kids caught bees.
The grizzly man was a idiot and stupidity killed him. and showing that idiot interacting with bears like he did probably endangered more people and killed more bears. because people think they can walk up and talk to every bear. bears are like people some are good, some not so much.
what you dont realize is bear hunting is a great sport. as is bee catching.
what makes it a great sport is the danger of getting stung.

The gullible masses once again believe some crap they read on the internet. It wouldn’t take much for a clever, fox like leader in the likes of Lenin to take over this country.

I mean half of you can’t even read the story right pertaining to the fact that the bear didn’t kill anybody. Half of you can’t spell. Half of you are probably drooling WWE fans.

You’re a sad lot. Say gullible masses, how about that alien autopsy?

Hi all and merry christmas, The story of the great bear could be and probably is true. I have lived in Northern Wyoming for 52 years and have lived in or near the mountains for as long. I have camped near bears all my life and I can tell you all non- belivers that you can arm chair quarterback all you want! I have been bluff charged many times and luckly I havent had to kill one of these wonderfiul creatures[yet] but I always carry bear spray and my 12 gauge shoot gun. Yes it is to bad that the bears life is over, but when the sh-t hits the fan you only have maybe 2 seconds to kiss your butt good-bye!Lets all enjoy the great outdoors before all of our rights are gone!

to the person on comment no. 50. I want to see a pay-per-view sport where we put bleeding heart, left wing-nut, cry baby animal rights activist in an arena with an 11′ bear, or 250 lb tiger or a 20′ salt water croc and see if you are still all cuddly and lovey dovey with them when they are ripping you apart…oh…you won’t have a gun since you are against them. And I’m curious if the pro big ass bear activist are also pro-life (anti abotion) activists. Oh thats right, you probally aren’t, animals are more important. Yeah, they are important for food.

  309. Comment by Eric Starr on December 30, 2007 1:25 pm

The fact is that many people love to be outdoors and as long as there’s people outdoors there are going to be encounters between people and animals. Most encounters are are positive but some are not.No one in their right mind is going to let an animal kill them so they don’t have to kill the animal. There are sprays that work in warding off animals(and I believe that everyone in bear country should be required to carry it) but in this case, with an animal this big,if it truely was being aggressive, there was probably no alternitive but to kill it.It’s sad but that’s just the way it is.If we don’t like it then we need to make all wilderness areas off limits to humans. Not my choice but a solution.

ive seen these pictures awhile ago and heard alot of different stories..the facts were all basically the same including that the bear had killed two people prior to its own death. even if it is a tragedy to see such an amazing creature die, it was in self defense..just proving humans are still top dog

THE TRUTH IS, WHEN YOU GO HUNTING OR HIKING, YOUR ALWAYS IN DANGER OF ALL KINDS OF DANGEROUS ANIMALS AND IF YOU GET ATTACKED YOU NEED TO FEND FOR YOURSELF. WHAT I DON’T AGREE WITH IS THAT I DON’T SEE ANIMALS CARRYING GUNS WHEN I GO HIKING. MOST ANIMALS RUN AWAY BECAUSE THEY ARE SCARED. WE HAVE BEEN KILLING ANIMALS FOR YEARS JUST TO PUT THEM IN ROOMS TO SHOW OFF SO YOU HAVE A STORY TO TELL. I GUESS IT MAKES THEM FEEL MORE LIKE MEN IF THEY HAVE A STORY TO TELL EVEN THOUGH MOST OF THE STORIES INVOLVE THEM SHOOTING AN ANIMAL THAT WAS ABOUT TO ATTACK THEM. YEAH, THAT’S FAIR.AND FOR THE IDIOT WHO SAID PEOPLE ALWAYS COME BEFORE ANIMALS, THEY WERE HERE BEFORE US. THE ONLY REASON WE COME BEFORE THEM IS BECAUSE WE CAN SPEAK.MAYBE ANIMALS LIKE BEARS WOULDN’T ATTACK US IF WE WOULD STOP TEARING DOWN THE FORESTS AROUND THE WORLD, WHICH HAPPEN TO BE THEIR HOMES. HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF YOU CAME HOME ONE DAY AND SOMEONE TORE YOUR HOUSE DOWN, I BET YOU WOULD BE PRETTY PISSED OFF TOO!

glad you enjoy nature K im one those guys that has bear rugs on my floor and deer and sheep heads on my wall. Thing is they aren’t for the stories to tell, its for stories to remember. its kind of the same as taking a picture. the thing is for it to be a true hunting story. or a life or death situation something has to die. those rugs and heads are perhaps are greatest gift to those animals it immortalizes them they become a part of are life. it is a tribute to how great they really were. a trophy room is basically a shrine to nature.
different hunters may have different reasons for hunting and displaying animals they kill but in the long run it is the same they are proud of that animal.
PS. and if animals weren’t conditioned to be scared and run other direction at site of man I guarantee your hike through bear country would not be very pleasurable

  317. Comment by Nadine on April 4, 2008 10:08 am

Firstly, hunting should only be done for food and self defence or because of over population. Killing an animal caught unawares is tatamount to a crime. One needs a legitimite reason to take a life.Secondly, for the people who feel that taking an animals life is wrong may wish to reflect on the fact that cattle are killed every day to provide meat, amongst other things ,for everyday living. The leather sneakers you buy cost and animal their life. The glue your children use to make crafts cost an animal their life. Lets not banter about life taking when everyday items, with no thought to their origins, are used by the very people who espouse such beliefs. Is killing an animal for sport legitimite? I think not. Try basketball instead. There are clear answers that need not be confusing. Take the time to think it through.

How anyone coming from a culture that has killed 40 million little humans through abortion in the last 40 years can get all weepy about a bear…A BEAR !!….getting killed is incredible. Someone should publish photos of little hands, feet, heads and torsos torn asunder by the abortionist’s knife. A bear. Who cares?

The truth is that you’re all wrong.. (I just read like the first 50 comments, so correct me if this has been said before) This bear was the 147th biggest of it’s kind, to have ever been caught. And the “hiker” was an Indian photo, of a tiger attack.. Well, atleast that’s what experts thought it was. So this “hiker” person was never eaten nor killed by this peticular bear.
Hopefully you’ll find some use of this information, and stop believing everything you see or hear on the internet.

lol, this story cracks me up. i watched this story on the history channel. the bear was only 11 feet tall and 1,200 lbs. i mean come on, 6,000 lbs. thats hilarious. there were bears that were 14 feet tall in prehistoric times, but they think that they’re extinct now. watch the history channel “MonsterQuest, Episode:28″ and they interview they guy that shot it.

First of all any of you who say the people killed were tresspasing and the bear had all the right, as if there is f-ckin territory lines printed on the ground. How would you like it if you were out for a walk and got eaten by a bear, would you forgive him and be like My bad. No you dip shits everybody eats meat sometime in there life and that means an animal died so you could have super. With out hunters animals over populate and that causes diseases. So good job on the kill.

To all the “just let them live” folks, the hunter had no choice, the bear was going for him, you don’t escape from a carnivorw that size. this wasn’t a hunny pot winnie the Pooh you morons! secondly, to the genius that claimed man had brought more animals to extinction than anything else or other creature- this explains all the dinosaurs running around these days. We have no idea how many species have been brought to extinction from other species, so that was a grossly unsubstantiated statement. seeing an animal such as that would be nothing less than terrifying even if viewed from the air…what if the plan crashed? Not to imply that these animals should be sought out and killed, but as anyone with an ounce of brains or any knowledge of wildlife management knows a carnivore that has developed a taste for human flesh is a danger to any it MAY come in contact with. It is typically those that live in the safety of their cities that preach the “live and let live” mantra and have never had the experience of being stalked by a puma (quite un-nerving), or finding bear tracks over your own when you return to your camp after fishing for your dinner. So pipe down and eat your sushi and let us wilderness type alone.

Okay so this thing is what 12 + feet tall and 14 foot wide
Okay to all the people here arguing about how this bear is a beautiful creature then you are right in a sense but wrong as well
It’s huge and will kill you and I don’t want that coming after me I would blast him in the head if it was coming after me to.
And yeah your right he wasn’t just going for a walk with a gun he was Hunting and so what if he is and that dam thing comes running at him a 1600 pound big ass bear what would you do
Try and out run it I don’t think so shoot it and hope for the best he unloaded 7mm rounds in to him dropped it then it some how was still alive. Then he shoots it in the head again with a full magazine to make sure it was dead if I was him I would have slit its throat to.
The point is get real people it’s a Animal we are the rulers of the planet and some times we have to do what we have to do. Now if this was a little cute dog that ran across the street and I accidentally hit him with my car I would fell remorse. But not with a F**k 1600 pound 12 foot bear running after me no way in gods name I would not be hesitant to shoot it.

  336. Comment by Dianne Nelson on May 29, 2009 1:44 am

I live in Alaska and I will not kill anything unless there is a reason and that reason is to save a life be it human or pet: then I will take action that is needed. One thing for sure is that shooting a bear in the head does not do much good unless you shoot it in the eye or shoot into the mouth and hope it takes out the spine. The skull on a bear is very thick and tough, how do you think they can live s for so long and then when death does come some of these bruins have old lead in them where they were shot but it was not a kill shot.
I am not sure of the exact quote but it goes something like this “a nation can be judged by how it treats its animals” that if from Gandhi, the man was very wise and if you have some troubles then read someof his work and find some good to come of evil.
Thats my thoughts on tis matter
