Yesterday’s story about wired and wireless network security, and policy-based networking (sort of) was really just preparation for WiFi Net News’ WPA Cracking story. Glenn Fleishman’s lead is quite direct, “we warned you: short WPA passphrases could be cracked — and now the software exists.”
He explains further:
a weakness in shorter and dictionary-word-based passphrases used with Wi-Fi Protected Access render those passphrases capable of being cracked. The WPA Cracker tool is somewhat primitive, requiring that you enter the appropriate data retrieved via a packet sniffer like Ethereal. Once entered, it runs the cracking algorithms.
Remember that to crack WEP, an attacker has to gather many packets, possibly millions, but can then easily crack any key. For WPA, certain shorter or dictionary-based keys are highly crackable because an attacker can monitor a short transaction or force that transaction to occur and then perform the crack far away from the physical site.
What are the solutions?
- Choose a better passphrase
Pick passphrases that aren’t entirely comprised of dictionary words…. “My dog has fleas”: very bad. “Mdasf;lkjadfklja;dfja;dfja;d”: very good, but hard to type in. Passphrases should be at least 20 characters.
- Use randomness to choose a passphrase
- Use WPA Enterprise or 802.1X + WPA
Or, as is my usual answer to all matters of wired and wireless network security: use good application layer security. Use SSH, SSH tunnelling, SSL, HTTPS, and anything else to make sure your passwords and other sensitive data never travel in the clear on any part of the network.

You can use your factory reset button somewhere on your router. Press and hold for a few seconds and than you just logon with default username and password for your router.

This is hilarious! Routers generally don’t run Windows, which is a requirement for Visual Basic programs to run at all. They often run some heavily modified version of Linux or something even more custom-made specifically for the router. You’d have to know, among other things, the router’s CPU architecture and hardware specs for successful code execution. And that’s assuming you’re programming hardcore Assembly language.
Sadly I don’t know if I should laugh or cry at the eagerness of all those folks here.. If something looks too good to be true, it usually is. Same here.
Seeing how a one-size-fits-all approach to fetch the keys from a router is impossible, you’re left with cryptanalysis, statistical attacks or brute forcing the key. WPA is much more resistant to cryptanalysis and statistical attacks than WEP so you’re essentially left with brute forcing for the time being. Unless you’re using a really simple passphrase, which is what this article is all about. Don’t do that and you’re fine for now.
Still don’t trust WPA? Try IPSec, it’s a tried and proven technology that’s pretty much bullet proof at protecting IP traffic. For individual applications that need secure tunneling you could also use ssh, a really clever UNIX tool.

My nextdoor friend has just installed a Wi-FI network. Yesterday, my laptop found it and I tried to use it to go to the Internet. Unfortunately it uses a WPA protocol with encryption and I was not able to connect. Now I am in my office, so far from my home. I installed Air Crack that has created a log file in which i see all the parametres necessary to connect to that WI-FI network.

Hi i am 1 of those idiots that use my neighbors internet because they dont have wep or wpa, i am not a hacker but have spent many hours seaching the net for anything that will break wep and wpa keys, only to find that its not for anyone that has no hacking or programing skills, everything apears to be linux based, i even have the $3500 program disinged to do everthing but is not compatible with what i have so its a waste of time to think that cracking a router is easy for anyone to do, if your not a hacker or programer give up.
Hey guys, Ive been in the hacking business for over 22 years. Anyway I have written a program that will give you unlimited access to a router using hte decryptive source backing technique. What I did was I made a code cave and injected it into a telnet command, which when the router is queried it causes the router to sniff the piece of code. While the router is sniffing the packet of code I send a code hook to cause the router to divert its attention to it. Then while its looking at the hook, the code cave is able to enter in and take over the routers firmware through backdoor jamming.
Anyway what all of this adds up to is a SUPER intelligent program that can detect the routers model, and its firmware version so that it can effectively dissect the router.

I tell you guys there are few free real tools to hack WEP or/and WPA. But they have very limited hardware support on Linux (and basically no Windows support) and is very unlikely to work on your PC. Anyways you can try if you like.
There are 2 popular Linux based Live CD releases: Troppix and BackTrack. To make use from either of them you will have to know wi-fi hacking principles and linux basics. In my opinion even noob could learn in 2 weeks. But be warned. Hacking networks is illegal. If u’re stupid enough u may end up in jail. Good luck.

I remastered the program but on C#. Now it calculates the wep/wpa key using Gauss-Jordan/Seidel/Jacobi algorithm. It really works!!!

First off Internet service should be free as the provides are huge corp’s. For me to have Internet at home it will cost me $45 CND per montth. *AHEM* why dont you guys just use aircrack-ng? just google it; its programs run on windows and linux, and it cracks WEP and WPA-PSK networks with ease. You could also use Backtrack, and its a LIVE CD DISTRO which makes cracking WEP easy, but it requires program language knowledge in Linux.
