The 10th-seeded Sampras moved into the title match with an impressive 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory over defending champion and No. 3 seed Marat Safin in Saturday’s second semifinal. Hewitt, the No. 4 seed, beat seventh-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 to earn a shot at his first Grand Slam title. The score was the most lopsided men’s semifinal in U.S. Open history. Sampras, a four-time Open champion, did not lose his serve in avenging a loss to Safin in last year’s U.S. Open final and has now held serve in 87 straight games…..
